Engine Cowls, Mounts and Segments

It was mentioned that an important find was the engine data plates with the serial number of the engine for comparison to the MACR in helping positively identifying the wreck. Another firm and positive method is finding one of the engine cover segments. Inside the segment is stenciled in the aircraft serial number and other information pertaining to what engine the cover came from and part number of the segment. Several engine segments were found at the site, some of them exhibit shrapnel damage ranging from slightly to overwhelming amount. It is also noted the the recovered engine segments represent all engine except #2. no segments so far have been identified as coming from # 2.

To the left are the fasteners that close the segments to the aircraft frame. They are called Dzus fasteners, named after their inventor William Dzus, a Ukrainian immigrant.
